Awww, I did it! I finished clearing out yet another trouble spot in my house. In this post I cover my project to create a household home base. I had looked at it for so long, dreading the process, all the while knowing just how wonderful it would be if I just got it done. Hindsight is always 20/20, and boy I wish I had done it sooner.
Why do we avoid these tasks that would change every day of our lives moving forward, if only we would bite the bullet and do the dirty work it would be a game changer. Not just visually but mentally. I have said it before, and I will say it again, physical clutter makes for mental chaos. I am oh so guilty of this. Little by little I am changing that mindset.
I will not let clutter hold me back anymore and neither should you!
Before:
This my friends is my “tech center” as the builder called it. Basically, a built-in desk nook in my hallway. Six years you guys, six years I have lived in this house and I have used it as a storage space. Tacky yes but convenient you bet! A total eyesore for everyone to see. I collected things daily on my kitchen island (to-do after work notes, school papers to sign, reminders, etc.) anything that needed attention. If it wasn’t to be forgotten the island is where it went. It was the hub of our household. The problem there was my island was also the hub of my cooking. My go-to spot to prepare dinner.
Daily conflict ensued. Until one day. I was thinking about moving the “household hub” to my desk. Immediately I knew that wasn’t an option. No space there. Then boom! It hit me like a ton of bricks. All those awesome spaces I see on Pinterest and tv, they had an intentional designated “home base.” I had a home base I just didn’t realize it, probably because it had never been used and in turn seen for what it actually was. It became my top priority to tackle this space to establish this important much-needed household space.
After:
This post is about so much more than the act of cleaning out junk. This clean new functional space I created was a monumental game-changer in the functionality of my home. Things now run so much smoother with significantly less frustration.
I could go through with you about how I did this, but there was no special trick to it.
- I trashed most of it
- I kept what was staying there
- I took anything else leftover and gave it a new home
That’s it. I spent absolutely nothing. I had everything already.
A trash can has become my best friend. I find it so freeing to throw things away after being someone who was always afraid to, in fear I might need it. The freedom I have felt in living in clutter-free spaces, the ease of finding things without digging, and the realization that less is better, makes dropping things into a trash can so much easier. It might even be a little addicting! So let it go, let it go. 🙂 Ok, that might be the song I sing in my head as I clean things out.
You can create a household home base anywhere
Even if you don’t have a nook space perfect for this, consider finding a spot in your home and setting up a household hub. It can be any free space you can designate for this purpose. A spot for you and your loves to centralize the running of your household and daily communication. As always it is functionality over appearance, if it works, it is perfect.
Life is always coming at us from a dozen different directions but a “home base” is the perfect place to peaceful bring it all together!
