It can be so frustrating to live in an overcrowded space. The condition of your home can have far-reaching consequences. A well-kept home can lend a sort of peace to each day. But on the contrary, a cluttered home can make you feel anxious and disorganized in your daily life, even when you are away from your home. You need a household storage solution.
I struggled for years with a cluttered house. It just always seemed like there wasn’t enough space or storage to get everything put away.
I want to share with you the solution that completely rocked my world (in a good way) when it finally clicked in my mind. That household storage solution…it was a storage building (rental space) a secure storage location not far from my house. Convenient but out of sight.
This storage solution can be any location that is separate from your home
Flashback…It seemed like a never-ending cycle, we would get fed up and rent a storage space, but then at some point down the road I would say, “what are we doing?” We are paying someone else to store stuff we don’t want at home. It would feel like a waste of money. We would then cancel the rental and move all the stuff back to our house. Take that cycle and repeat over and over. That was our life.
So, you are thinking, “Ok, then how is this a solution?”
Well, let me tell you, it was all in the mindset and approach.
We were shuttling EVERYTHING back and forth that we didn’t have room for at home all the while collecting more. You see, we were storing things we didn’t even really need anymore AND things that we needed often. Setting us up to have to make frequent trips, which gave us yet another reason in those moments to cancel and move everything back home.
Fast-forward to the moment it all came together for me.
Only store away from your home, what you:
must/want to keep
don’t need often.
Now, I live with a very straightforward approach. Everything at our house gets a “home.” If it doesn’t get a home, it goes to “donate,” “storage,” “sale,” or “trash.” We only keep what we frequently need (at least once a month) at our house. Donations and trash are taken care of quickly, so anything else goes to storage. If you’re wondering, I collect the “sale” items in storage as well to keep it from piling up around the house until the next garage sale.
Bottom line: I only store things we truly need to keep that we also only occasionally use. (It’s still a lot of stuff but it isn’t in my house!)
I don’t make frequent trips to the storage room, and my house stays clutter free because what needs to stay at our house has a home. Nothing is left lying around.
This storage solution is a tool that we use to maintain a well-organized home. I finally realized that there were a lot of things taking up precious space in our home but hardly ever used. By making the purpose of our storage space so intentional and not a catch-all, the storage cost is justified, and it is a pivotal part of my home management system.
When I started approaching the daily operations of my house and organizational process from this direction, the fog of overwhelm started to dissipate quickly. The feeling of a clean and clutter-free home is addictive friend! Come join me!
This a quick and simple technique to manage the household clutter, and I just had to share it with you. I hope that implementing this approach will be a defining moment for you as well in your efforts to calm the chaos with simple solutions.
If you are searching for a remedy to your clutter, consider doing a major clean out and follow the process I detailed above. If you do not have a good place to store items that are important without creating clutter in your home, consider some form of storage elsewhere. Whether that’s a backyard building or a rental space elsewhere. Finding a location for those items outside of your home will be a game-changer! I believe it could be the perfect solution you’ve been searching for…I know it was for me!
What other creative ways have you come up with for storage? I would love to hear your ideas! Comment below.
